Viva Hate
Earlier this evening I watched the first of three one hour long episodes of a new mini Swedish tv-series called Viva Hate. And I enjoyed it.
The year is 1991, the place is Gothenburg. Four young guys is determined to become rock stars, inspired by idols such as Six Pistols, The Cure, Imperiet, Nationalteatern, The Cult and - if you haven't made the connection yet - The Smiths.
It's about music, about believing and fighting for your dream, the dream of becoming something very well known - regardless of how you get there, which means you also have to deal with the consequences of your actions. It's also about relationships, about love, to one's family, friends, girl- or boyfriends.
The protagonist Daniel is the result of a one night stand with a man his mother doesn't even caught the name of. His older brother Tommy drags him into one criminal thing after the other, in order to free himself from a 100 000 crowns debt to a guy called Sören. The show starts with Daniel robbing a music shop himself alongside his three band members. On their way driving from the police, they see a young gal about to jump from the bridge they're driving on, and Daniel jumps off the car to talk to her. Things doesn't really go as planned, but she survives and later on Daniel is trying to meet up with her - she does come to his band's gig, but they haven't had the chance to talk yet.
His band members consists of Fabian the drummer who makes cookies, Juan the bass player and Morgan the vocalist who just got evicted for having had the band's first gig in his apartment. Morgan also got beaten by his father and is now about to move home to his mother.
Peter Birro is the author of the show. "(Daniel) thinks that love is a fraud and that those who love are idiots. He only believes in Morrissey, friendship and his friends in the rock band Viva Hate". - svt.se
I really liked the atmosphere, the quick and natural dialogs (apart from with Camilla and Sören, you'll know what I mean), the nice shootings which don't feel typical Swedish-movie stiff. It's enjoyable, it's good music, it's good young actors and I can't wait for the next episodes.

Just incase someone from Scotland reads this, just because i mentioned Swedish and English subtitles in the same sentence it doesn't mean im talking about porn movies.

Just watched second episode, can't wait for the last one, which is being aired tomorrow but that's gonna have to wait 'til I get back from England..!
*Spoiler alert* The gal on the bridge turned out to be lesbian, Daniel tattooed her name on his shoulder anyway, almost got killed by the criminal failure Sören and trashed the band's big play for the record label agent as he showed up drunk. The band would get signed anyway though - if they kicked Daniel out of the band, which they did.
Btw, noticed there really is an American band called Viva Hate:
